This Is It – 44m Motor Catamaran New Build Coating Monitoring & Inspection
Overview
Motor Catamaran This Is It, a 44m motor catamaran new built by Tecnomar / The Italian Sea Group in Italy, required specialized coating inspection and monitoring during her build phase.
As appointed Coating Inspector, I ensured that the coating system was executed to the highest standards expected of a modern, high-profile yacht.
Objective
Scope of Work
- Full coating inspection and monitoring throughout the new build process
- Verification of surface preparation and fairing quality
- Supervision of coating application procedures and system build-up
- Monitoring environmental conditions affecting coating performance
- Identification and resolution of defects or deviations in real time
- Ensuring compliance with manufacturer specifications and shipyard standards
Before
After
Key Challenges
- Achieving a uniform, high-gloss finish across the complex geometry of a large catamaran
- Maintaining strict quality control within an active new-built shipyard environment
- Coordinating multiple application teams to ensure consistency across all surfaces
- Preventing defects that could affect both aesthetics and long-term durability
Outcome
- Delivered a high-quality coating system meeting premium yacht standards
- Achieved a consistent, high-end finish across all visible surfaces
- Ensured full compliance with technical specifications of the coating system
- Minimized rework through continuous monitoring and early intervention
Impact
This project reflects my approach to coating inspection: multicultural management, technical precision, and decisive intervention.
Maintained control within a complex new-build environment, effectively managing multiple trades, multinational teams, and strict time schedules.
This ensured that the coating system was not only visually flawless, but also technically robust and built for long-term performance, safeguarding both the yacht’s appearance and its asset value.
